Integrative Counselling and Psychotherapy
In integrative counselling and psychotherapy, concepts and techniques from different therapeutic approaches and orientations are combined to best meet the individual needs and preferences of clients. Integrative counsellors and psychotherapists specifically train in how to best do this blending together of different ideas and ways of helping, but many other therapists, especially at Mindtalk, work in this way too.
Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
In cognitive-behavioural therapy, the client’s thoughts and behaviours are considered and how they are linked to certain feelings. During therapy, the therapist and client explore different, new ways of thinking and behaving and the client is encouraged to test them out and practice them in between sessions. The client improves as his or her thoughts and behaviours become more flexible and balanced.
Person-Centred Counselling and Psychotherapy
In person-centred counselling and psychotherapy, the client’s subjective experiences are valued and validated. The therapist relates to the client’s feelings, thoughts and behaviours with empathy, genuineness and without judgement. This non-directive, validating process promotes self-discovery, empowers the client and facilitates positive change.
Psychodynamic Counselling and Psychotherapy
In psychodynamic counselling and psychotherapy, the client’s relational styles with self and others are explored. Links are made between experiences early in life and the present. In this context, the client’s fears and worries and ways of defending against them become apparent. New insights and positive emotional experiences within the therapeutic relationship facilitate new ways of managing emotions and relationships. This in return has a positive impact on emotional wellbeing.
Compassion-Focused Therapy (CFT)
Compassion-focused therapy (CFT) is an effective treatment helping people overcome problems associated with anger, anxiety, self-criticism, self-attacking, shame and feelings of emptiness. CFT is an integrative approach combining techniques from cognitive-behavioural therapy with strategies from other psychotherapeutic approaches.
CFT works by increasing feelings of safeness, belonging and being cared for through the development of compassion and self-compassion. There is a growing body of scientific research demonstrating the role of compassion in effectively dealing with threat and resolving conflict.
In CFT, time is spent reflecting on the client’s experiences, fears and concerns, and on developing a shared understanding of what could be maintaining the client’s problems. Therapy consists of a mixture of joint explorations and applied exercise. At Mindtalk CFT is offered by Nina Watson.
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)
EMDR is a powerful treatment helping people overcome traumatic experiences such as road traffic accidents, birth and surgical trauma, work place accidents, sexual and/or physical abuse, assault and war experiences.
EMDR is an integrative therapy approach. It uses techniques from cognitive-behavioural therapy and other psychotherapeutic approaches as well as the body’s natural healing properties. At the start, the therapist carries out a thorough assessment and time is spent increasing the client’s inner resources and coping strategies. Following this, the client is asked specific questions about a particular disturbing memory. Then, a series of eye movements, similar to those during deep sleep, are created.
With repeated sets of eye movements, the memory is reprocessed and tends to loose its painful intensity. It becomes a neutral memory of an event in the client’s autobiographical past. Associated memories may also heal at the same time. This reprocessing of the target memory as well as related memories can lead to a dramatic and rapid improvement in many aspects of the client’s life.
EMDR is an innovative clinical treatment which has successfully helped over a million people. Its validity and reliability has been established by several controlled studies making EMDR the most throughly researched method used in the treatment of trauma. At Mindtalk EMDR is offered by Aubyn de Lisle and Nina Watson.
Young People Counselling
At Mindtalk we offer friendly, confidential counselling for young people. We work with teenagers using an integrative counselling and psychotherapy approach. We believe that this best meets their need for acceptance, emotional support and direction.
Young people who come to Mindtalk for counselling can trust that what they share during counselling stays between them and their therapist. In line with mind talk’s confidentiality policy, the only exception to this are disclosures about intentions to seriously harm oneself or others. In such incidences, the therapist discusses with the young person who to approach for additional help and what information to share.
